RADIOACTIVE
Mafalda Silva (Norway)
Professor Marie Curie takes a sip from the vial on her bedside table. The fine, wrinkled folds of her neck move gradually as the viscous liquid goes down her throat. Swallowing is difficult, as it has often been over the past two months. With some disappointment, the professor notes that the painkiller does not seem to be alleviating the pain as it usually did. She reflects for a moment on the significance of this change, before a sudden cough seizes her. ”
“Radioactive” begins in the final weeks of the life of Marie Curie, the brilliant Polish scientist famous for her revolutionary research on radioactive elements and their properties. At the beginning of the 20th century, she worked passionately and tirelessly in this previously unknown field of physics, alongside her husband Pierre, at the expense of their personal health.
